چکیده

Quick Facts... •Meeting protein, energy, vitamin and mineral requirements is essential for profitable lamb finishing. •Feedlot lambs are more efficient when self-fed than when hand-fed twice daily. •Lambs fed whole grains have as good or better performance than when they are fed rolled or ground grains. •If lamb finishing rations are more than 60 percent roughage, they should be pelleted for best performance. •Compare protein and energy sources for lamb finishing on a cost-per-nutrient basis with maximum ingredient restrictions in mind.

Market Impacts of Reducing the Prevalence of Bovine Respiratory Disease in United States Beef Cattle Feedlots

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a common endemic disease among North American feedlot cattle. BRD can lead to significant economic losses for individual beef cattle feedlot producers through mortality and morbidity. With promising new management and technology research that could reduce BRD prevalence, this study evaluates the potential impacts of a reduction of BRD in the US beef cattle fe...

Effect of Calcium Alginate Edible Coatings on Microbial and Chemical Properties of Lamb Meat during Refrigerated Storage

Background: Edible films and coatings have potential benefits for food packaging, particularly meat products. These coatings prevent weight loss and texture changes during shelf life by reducing moisture loss in fresh and frozen meat products. In this study, effect of calcium alginate edible coating on microbial and chemical properties of refrigerated lamb meat over a period of  5 days was...

FEEDLOT MANAGEMENT Matching Cattle Type and Feedlot Performance

Correct projection of breakeven prices is essential to profitable cattle feeding. In order to calculate breakevens correctly, feedlot performance must be predicted accurately. Average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion (F/G), days on feed, carcass characteristics, morbidity and mortality can vary greatly from one group of cattle to another. This paper will revie...

Effects of using ground redberry juniper and dried distillers grains with solubles in lamb feedlot diets: growth, blood serum, fecal, and wool characteristics.

Effects of using ground redberry juniper and dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) in Rambouillet lamb (n = 45) feedlot diets on growth, blood serum, fecal, and wool characteristics were evaluated. In a randomized design study with 2 feeding periods (Period 1 = 64% concentrate diet, 35 d; Period 2 = 85% concentrate diet, 56 d), lambs were individually fed 5 isonitrogenous diets: a contro...
